SMO v SEO: What’s the Difference?

The age of the internet has seen a boom in people flocking to it for all sorts of reasons, including purchasing and selling goods and services. This has opened up a new market, and many businesses are looking to take advantage of this boom by getting on the internet. Of course, with a few billion businesses online today, good advertising is required to ensure that your business shows up first in searches and gets good visibility online.

SMO and SEO are a couple of online advertising and marketing techniques that are used to increase the visibility of a business on the internet. What’s the difference between the two though and how can that help you get your business on the center stage?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process by which your business website is driven to the top rankings in a search engine (like Google, Bing, Yahoo and so forth) for certain search terms and relevant keywords. It is an organic technique, and it requires you to optimize the content and keywords in your website. This technique takes time to properly implement and to see results, but in the long term, good SEO makes a whole lot of difference to the brand visibility of your website. The way to accomplish this is to publish good, original content with keywords relevant to the search terms expected for your business. Getting SEO done for your website doesn’t cost you anything to get started, and can be done by you. But if you are looking for faster results, paying to get good SEO done will benefit you a lot.

Whereas SMO (Social Media Optimization) is the process by which you get more traffic driven to your business website by promotions and posts on social media websites (like Facebook, Twitter, Google Adwords and so forth). These type of social media promotion campaigns usually cost money (either per click or per impression) and generate results very quickly.

The key differences between the two techniques is that well optimized SEO is good for your business in the long term, and will keep generating good leads for your website for a long time to come, and improves the global visibility of your website. It costs little to no money to implement, and inherently makes you develop good content and ideas for your website, and as such is viewed as an organic technique. SMO is a great way to generate a lot of leads, fast!

While SEO is a great technique, it takes a lot of time for you to start seeing results and leads getting generated. If you are looking to make money, and get your business on the radar quickly, SMO is the way to go. With many people on social media networks these days, running a social media promotional campaign is a sure-shot way to generate a whole load of leads and get good traffic directed to your website. The trade-off is that, these campaigns cost a lot of money, and become unsustainable to keep running, unless you are making crazy amounts of money in the form of sales (unpractical, but still possible) to keep the campaigns running.
